Motivation for these pieces
Until the Presidential elections in 1992, I paid virtually zero interest in world affairs. Not that an outside observer would have considered my life enthralling, but I did. I surmise that, had I been pressed to justify my self-absorption, I might have managed a semi-coherent version of the ideas I am struggling to express in these pieces.
The only reason I began to pay attention to the larger world was the venomous attacks on Bill Clinton that continued unabated throughout his two terms in office. I found Clinton interesting because of his obvious intelligence, not his dubious character. His intellect was clearly in a different league altogether than those of his attackers. The mean-spiritedness and relentlessness of the campaign of vilification was impossible to simply ignore. Then came the elections in the year 2000. At first I told myself that the reason the Democrats eventually accepted Bush's shameful usurpation was the noble desire to avoid a constitutional crisis. By this time I was paying close attention and this naïve delusion soon evaporated. The true reason for the forebearance of the Democrats, I now believe, is that electoral fraud in the USA is standard operating procedure. Had the Democrats made an issue of Bush's outrageous coup, the true level of corruption that pervades the American system might well have been exposed in all its unholy squalour.
We arrive at the surreal events of September 2001. Shortly after this, I sat down and wrote down my thoughts on what had happened. Entirely against my will, driven only by logic, I arrived at the devastating conclusion that this was an inside job. No other explanation stood up to the hard glare of reason. The sophistication of the operation went far beyond the thousands of dead and extensive material damages. This was a calculated attack on the psyche of humanity. This was the prelude to the dismantling of the old order of the world. |
